The easier you make your marketing, the better results you get.

In today's article, I will tell you why most marketing is bad and confusing and show you one simple way to improve yours.  Let’s get into it!

People are bad in following complex instructions

Have you ever heard of the Term Occam’s razor?

If you haven’t, it’s worth looking up.

I won’t go too deep into it but one thing there is I would like to tell you.

See, there are different theories about problem-solving, but the simplest explanation or solution—with the fewest assumptions—is often most likely the right one.

I am a big fan of making things simple.

Now, what you’ll notice when it comes to advertising is that the more simple you make things, the more easier and straight forward you make things, and the better your results will be.

I mean seriously, I look at marketing every day and see confusing stuff.

And the thing is people don’t even notice how confusing their advertising is.

To give you a better understanding of what I mean by that, let me tell you a quick story.

I remember a friend of mine had a big problem with his staff.

They just couldn’t follow the given instructions.

What did he do against it?

He came up with an idea to filter out people directly in his hiring process.

What he did was pretty simple.

He basically told the people:

“If you want to apply for the job, do not send a letter to this address, do not send an email to this address, and do not call this number.

Instead, I want you to send a letter by registered mail to this address and this address only.

He told them, I want you to make sure that it arrives between Tuesday and Thursday.

And lastly, I want you to mention this specific word somewhere in the letter.”

Pretty easy to do or not?

Now, let me tell you, the amount of people that got that wrong is enormous.

Obviously, that was good for him, in that way, he perfectly filtered out the ones wich couldn’t follow his instructions.

What I want to make clear with that story is, that people are very good at following simple instructions, and not so good at following more complicated instructions.

What brings us this story when it comes to advertising?

Make it simple

Every ad needs to have a clear and very simple instruction.

That means,

Every ad, every piece of sales copy, and every step in the process only does one thing and one thing only.

(What is said next is very important and almost every business including billion-dollar corporations gets this wrong.)

It doesn't matter if your ads are funny, it doesn't matter if you get many likes or followers.

It also doesn't matter if the people like it.

The only thing that matters is…

How many sales do we get?

How many people have we converted to paying customers?

Take a minute and look at the perfume advertising of Dior or other big companies, and look at the car advertising of big companies.

What you will find out is that it absolutely doesn't make any sense and is dump.

The reason why that is so is because they think about how to please the board of directors, how to please their stockholders,

how to please Wall Street and how to make sure that people aren't pissed off etc.

In the end the matter is not anymore to get sales, it’s rather how to look good. And that is complicated in today's world…

One thing at a time

Now as I said we don’t do that.

Our only goal is to sell with the ads we make.

Too many small businesses focus on too many things at the same time with their ads.

They focus on giving the customer infos, making the ad funny, building their brand, getting more attention, and selling.

And all that they try to do with one single ad.

You should instead do one thing at a time, otherwise, you can’t measure the results and the customer gets confused.

A confused customer does nothing, we don’t want that.

Your ad should only have one goal at a time.

Your ad should not be confusing and give very simple instructions.

Make it easy for them to say yes and hard to get lost.

If you get these three things right…

Your ads are already better than the majority and you will see immediate improvement.

Now of course there are much more things to get right when running ads.

And even if you’ve read my other article about marketing…
